On the 23rd May 2021 an aerial tramway car running from the city of Stresa to the top of the Mottarone peak, close to lake Orta in Piedmont, crashed into a pylon and the side of the mountain killing 14 of the 15 passengers. The sole survivor was a 5 year old Israeli child, Eitan, whose fate has become the subject of legal battles between Italy and Israel. The two stage cable car system has a midpoint station where passengers transfer from one car to another to continue their ascent. The cable car was approaching the top station when the traction cable snapped and the car careered back down the support cable to the mid station where it was catapulted into the void. The crash was later attributed to interference by the owner in the braking system, all in a bid to save money
