We interviewed the leaders of Architects for Social Housing who have been following the unfolding housing crisis in London since the beginning of the re-generation process by which London boroughs attempt to replace social housing with homes for the more wealthy. They explain the technical and social aspects of how the Grenfell Tower fire was allowed to happen.
More than two decades have passed since the Eschede accident and finally, survivors and relatives of the victims feel they begun to receive adequate apologies from Deutsche Bahn. The memorial near the rail line in Eschede established in the years immediately following the disaster is now a place where those whose lives were touched by the accident can go for solace and remembrance.
The cherry blossoms of the 101 trees bloom in April and May, creating a theatre of memorial blossoms for the passing high-speed trains that still whiz by on a daily basis. There is also a federal agency in Germany today that was created in the wake of Eschede, the Ramstein air disaster and 9-11 attacks in New York City, in which a number of German families were involved. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) was established on 1st May 2004 and is centrally designed to provide organisational support, counseling and information to citizens caught up in national and international disasters.
